Ingredient: Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds are such a star ingredient because although they are tiny, they are full of nutritional goodies! Pipas is a traditional and nutritious Spanish snack for kids and are simply roasted and salted sunflower seeds in their shells.
They are a great source of magnesium for your muscles and vitamin E which supports your skin, plus they offer a lovely boost of plant-based protein. For children who can’t eat nuts, sunflower seeds offer a great alternative and are easy to digest and they are also an ingredient to prioritise if you are egg-free. This is because like eggs, sunflower seeds offer a good amount of choline, a vital nutrient which supports learning and the nervous system.
In your kitchens, sunflower seeds will add a soft, toasty flavour that can work in both sweet and savoury dishes. I love adding them to egg-fried rice and add them to my Go-Go Goji Berry Trail Mix, which is Christopher and my go-to snack. Sunflower seeds are also lovely stirred into a flapjack mix, into bread mixes, granola or tossed through a salad with herbs and lemon.
