How to prevent and ease kids’ after-school meltdowns
If your child is the one who holds it all together at school and then everything collapses at the school gate when you pick them up, then you are certainly not alone. Many parents dread the predictable dysregulation from school pickup until they are tucked up in bed. It’s really not fair on you when you are probably at your most exhausted too!
Thankfully, an empty fuel tank and a worn-out nervous system explain many of the after-school big emotions and most kids respond quickly to some straightforward diet and nutrition tweaks.
If your child comes out of the school gate wired, oppositional or weepy, you are watching a nervous system that has spent its last drop of energy getting through the day. Their teacher tells you they are a ‘Perfect Peter’ in class, yet after school they are crying over doing their homework or roaring and snapping at their little brother like ‘Horrid Henry’. This has been dubbed ‘after-school restraint collapse’ by the parenting educator Andrea Loewen Nair in Canada, and so many parents I know can relate to this.
After raising three children myself (two with ADHD), and 30 years of clinical experience, here is what I ask parents to do straight away when they have a child who struggles with big emotions after school. Thankfully, most parents see a difference within a fortnight of taking these simple steps. And if your child still struggles once these are in place, then our NatureDoc clinical team can look deeper.

Why the meltdowns at school pick-up?
Your child’s brain runs on a steady flow of glucose. When that runs low, their brain leans on its emergency system, which runs on a stress hormone known as cortisol. When blood sugar crashes and cortisol spikes, the wheels start falling off and you see a dysregulated, irritated and burned-out child.
So, keeping a steady flow of glucose to the brain is vital. This is best done by giving your child well-balanced meals and snacks that contain a combination of carbohydrate, protein and healthy fats, as well as enough fruit and vegetables.
This sounds like a simple ask, but this is not every child’s reality, as breakfasts these days tend to be rushed with a quick slice of toast and jam or a grabbed pastry on the way to school, which are mainly carbohydrates. Snacks (healthy or not) are often fruit, rice cakes, breadsticks or biscuits and, again, mainly carbohydrate. And many kids are picky and hard to feed well.
Research in school children has found that salivary cortisol goes up in children who are served breakfasts with lots of sugar and refined carbohydrates (foods with a high glycaemic index), such as cereal, pastries, or toast. Conversely, children given a higher-protein breakfast such as eggs, yoghurt or cheese (lower glycaemic index) feel more alert, happier and less nervous throughout the morning and have lower cortisol levels when tested.
School lunches are improving, but for many kids, lunchtime is a major stress point of the day. Noisy, bright lunch halls, unfamiliar food and the challenge of navigating allergies can all be difficult, and very often even the best-quality food and menu is left virtually untouched.
Add tiredness to a blood sugar dip and your child has nothing left in reserve. And this means that, towards the end of the day, an under-fuelled child will become reactive, irritable and in a state of high fight or flight. This is where their window of tolerance, the zone where they cope with frustration and where they can think clearly, shrinks to nothing. And even a tiny thing like serving food from the wrong coloured bowl becomes a catastrophe.
Ruby’s story
A mother brought her seven-year-old daughter, whom I will call Ruby, to see me last autumn. Her teacher described Ruby as capable, hardworking and a pleasure to teach. Her mother described their walk home from school as 20 minutes of screaming and then it was an uphill battle of managing her big emotions until Ruby finally collapsed into bed at 8pm.
Ruby’s day looked like this: Two mouthfuls of dry chocolate cereal and a glass of orange juice at 7.30am. She had an apple and a biscuit at breaktime, and her teacher said she only picked at her school lunch. We changed three things in Ruby’s day. Firstly, she had a big plate of scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast. Her mid-morning snack had a few chunks of cheese added to it to tide her over until she started to enjoy her school lunch more. She was then handed a proper snack at the school gate at pick-up. Within a week the screaming stopped, and her mother messaged me to say that they now had the time and bandwidth for some fun activities after school.
Build a bigger breakfast
A hearty breakfast sets your child off on a better footing for the school day, and most children eat far too little at breakfast, or have the wrong combination of foods. Remember, they may well not have eaten since 6pm the night before, and their academic morning lessons will use up lots of energy, so breakfast is the most important time of day to fuel their brain. A slice of toast and a splash of juice will not be enough to carry a primary school child through to lunchtime.
Protein is the part of breakfast that parents most often miss. Protein-rich breakfasts leave children fuller and less hungry for hours afterwards, so they are less likely to raid the biscuits at break time. Protein also slows the release of any carbohydrate eaten alongside it, which keeps blood sugar on an even keel throughout the morning and cortisol in check.
If you want an easier after-school experience, serve your kids some protein alongside a slow-release carbohydrate every morning. Think scrambled or boiled eggs on sourdough; try full-fat Greek yoghurt with berries and ground seeds and a drizzle of honey. Porridge made with milk and a generous dollop of nut butter is delicious and filling. Some kids do well on leftovers from the night before.
If mornings are chaotic and rushed, do some of the preparation the night before by soaking oats in yoghurt and milk, boiling eggs or blending a smoothie.
Feed them before they get through the door
School pick-up is one of the most fractious moments of the day, and it can make or break the rest of your afternoon and evening. Always bring food with you to the school gate and hand it over to them before you say anything at all. Your child’s blood sugar is on the floor at this point, and their cortisol is at its highest. The part of their brain that handles conversation has clocked off, so this is why it is best to simply hand over the food, rather than get into negotiations or choices over snack options.
Make this snack really count by including enough protein and some healthy fat to help them feel steady until supper. Ideas include an egg and cress sandwich or a wrap with chicken and cheese. It could be hummus and oatcakes, or cheese cubes and apple slices, or a handful of nuts and a satsuma.
Homemade flapjacks, energy balls or muffins, which you can batch-bake and freeze so they defrost in minutes, are always popular (grab them out of the freezer as you are leaving the house for your school run).

The nutrients that steady a wobbly nervous system
When a child melts down day after day after school, I look at the raw materials their nervous system needs to regulate itself. Four nutrients frequently come up as being particularly important for the dysregulated children we see at NatureDoc:
- Magnesium – This mighty mineral calms the nervous system and relaxes a high cortisol state. A child low in magnesium might also have restless legs, twitches, tics or constipation. You can find magnesium in spinach, kale, pumpkin seeds, almonds, avocado and dark chocolate. The NIH recommended daily amount of magnesium for children is 130 mg for ages 4 – 8 and 240 mg for ages 9 – 13.
- Omega-3 fats – These essential fatty acids, which come from the diet, build the membranes of your child’s brain cells. Several trials have found reductions in behavioural problems, such as impulsivity and reactive aggression, when omega-3 levels are optimised. Serve your child oily fish two or three times a week, choosing from salmon, mackerel, sardines and trout. Walnuts, flaxseed and chia help top things up too, but these are not usually enough on their own. You can spot if your child needs more as they will have dry skin and hair, and even ‘chicken skin’ at the top of their arms, and at that point you will probably see more benefits from supplementing 650-1,000 mg daily.
- Zinc – This is a vital mineral for nervous system regulation and helps to reduce mood swings. Even though most children do consume some zinc through their diet as it comes from meat, shellfish, dairy, eggs, pumpkin seeds and chickpeas, it gets used up faster in children eating lots of refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods, so this is why some kids have shortfalls. A child who needs more zinc may have a fiery, reactive character and is likely to be very specific about what they will and won’t eat. The recommended daily amount of zinc is 5 mg for ages 4 – 8 and 8 mg for ages 9 – 13, with upper limits of 12 mg and 23 mg respectively.
- Iron carries oxygen to the brain and supports dopamine production, which is especially important for kids living with ADHD. Slightly low iron levels can dull concentration and flatten the mood even before it tips into anaemia. Good dietary sources of iron include red meat liver, eggs, lentils, spinach and apricots, especially when eaten alongside a vitamin C food such as a satsuma or some strawberries. Children need 8-10 mg of iron daily and menstruating girls need around 15 mg, so many kids do not get enough from diet alone.
Herbs that take the edge off the after-school wobbles
Food is a vital way to help regulate kids. However, some children, especially those who are neurodivergent, need a bit more help to find that balance, especially when they are exhausted from having to work extra hard or masking all day.
Here are some herbal remedies that many parents swear by, and that have evidence supporting their use for a child’s nervous system. All five work with the same two systems:
- Cortisol, the hormone that surges when blood sugar drops and demands on a child pile up.
- GABA, the calming neurotransmitter that puts the brakes on a racing nervous system.
These remedies often come as gummies or powders that are easy to stir into smoothies, yoghurt and fruit purée. Older kids might enjoy herbal teas with a dash of honey or capsules for convenience.
- Lemon balm has the best evidence in this age group and is particularly helpful for stabilising GABA. It makes a delicious tea and helps a child feel safe, secure and settled.
- Theanine is the calming amino acid in green tea (the non-caffeine part). It raises GABA activity as well as alpha brainwaves, the pattern your child produces when they feel relaxed and alert at once. Theanine has been found to noticeably reduce the salivary cortisol response to a stressful task.
- Saffron can lift the mood and ease anxiety, working as a balancer across several systems by supporting serotonin, dopamine and GABA together.
- Lavender can help to calm overexcited nerve cells in the hippocampus and may help with anxiety. Add a few drops of appropriately diluted lavender essential oil to your child’s bath, or give them a mug of herbal tea containing lavender or a lavender supplement.
- Chamomile contains apigenin, which again helps with GABA signalling. A mug of chamomile tea with a spoonful of honey after school is a lovely ritual, and the warm drink helps a child to feel calmer and more settled.
Round up
The child who falls apart in front of you at four o’clock in the afternoon is telling you that their tank is empty and their cortisol is rising. This is the time to fill them up with the good stuff and remember it all starts with a great nourishing breakfast.
