Cinnamon Apple Flax Porridge
A steaming bowl of porridge is one of the yummiest breakfast winners. This recipe for cinnamon apple flax porridge is one for all the family, as everyone loves the comforting warmth of a bowl of hot oats sweetened with natural goodness. It’s also a perfect way to use up any apples you may have growing in your garden.
I have made this cinnamon apple flax porridge with an extra healthy twist, using nourishing whole organic milk and omega 3 rich flax seed (also known as linseed) to provide extra protein, healthy omega 3 fats, vitamin D and fibre. The milk can be easily swapped for almond or oat milk if you are dairy-free or vegan. The cinnamon is also brilliant at preventing sugar highs as well as making this porridge taste sublime. This extra nutrition in theory, means that a bowl of this scrummy porridge should help you and your family feel nice and full, with good constant energy, and you may even enjoy lovely clear focus all the way through to lunchtime.
We prefer to use steel cut oats in our house, as we find these are better digested, but you can go for any oats you prefer: gluten-free, sprouted, rolled or jumbo. Younger kids tend to like rolled oats most, as they have a softer and smoother texture.
Whole flax seeds are lovely and crunchy and don’t have any particular taste. You can get them in most supermarkets. However for kids who are a bit fussy with texture or are suspicious of new ingredients choose milled seeds like these. Also, these apple and cinnamon milled seeds are also a winner when you are in a rush or don’t have a fresh apple to hand – simply stir into plain porridge just before you serve it.

Hi, what weight of flaxseed is needed for this recipe and should they be crushed?
I would go with 1 teaspoon which is 3-5 grams. Ideally, the flax seeds would be ground up in a coffee grinder but this is not essential. Many thanks Lucinda
