Ingredient: Hemp Seeds

Hemp is one of humanity’s oldest cultivated crops (8,000+ years). Henry VI actually used to fine English farmers for NOT growing hemp! The Royal Navy was entirely dependent on hemp for sails and ropes (the word “canvas” literally comes from its detrivative which i won’t spell out).
Hulled hemp seeds are the soft inner part of the seed when the tough shell has been removed. Although we call them “seeds”, they actually behave and taste more like nuts, which explains their yummy creamy flavour. Try a spoonful sprinkled into porridge, yoghurt or blend them into a smoothie. If you have a nut allergy, check with your GP first!
They are a complete plant protein and offer all of the nine essential amino acids that we need, and they naturally provide omega-3 and omega-6 fats, magnesium, iron and fibre. They also contain some GLA, the same fatty acid found in evening primrose oil, which has been studied for its potential role in easing PMS symptoms. Hemp seeds also contain phospholipids, which help to support healthy cell membranes and are important for brain and nerve function. Because the hull has been removed, it makes them easy to digest too.
Another thing that I love about hemp is that it’s incredibly planet friendly. Needing 50% less water than growing cotton, hemp also improves soil quality. Plus, hemp requires less pesticides and fertilisation, and its very versatile fibres can even be turned into biodegradable plastics.
