    Ingredient: Cacao Nibs

Cacao nibs are found roasted or raw and are from the unrefined centre of the cacao bean that has been dried and cracked. These little brown nibs are what chocolate is made from before anything sugary or milky is added to it. They are crunchy, with a slightly fruity, yet bitter taste.

Ideally choose the raw cacao nibs which are not heat treated and processed like cocoa, as this way they retain more of their natural goodness. Both roasted and raw cacao nibs help support immunity, energy levels and brain function as they are rich in iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc. The raw nibs also have the benefit of containing good levels of vitamin C. Magnesium is important for calming your nervous system, something which growing children (and their parents) often need a little help with.

Historically, cacao was revered by the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, who valued it for both food and medicine, it was even used as currency! So, it is lovely to see that these precious nibs are finding their way back into family kitchens and restaurants today. We pair them with goji berries in a trail mix, sprinkle them on top of chocolate mousse and you can stir them into overnight oats for crunch or add them to banana muffins for a subtle chocolate lift without the sugar. An easy way to try them, is to simply top your Greek yoghurt and berries with them – cacao nibs are great nutritious win for when everyone needs a yummy treat.
